Help-Portrait was an amazing event to say the least.  Among meeting wonderful families and individuals, I also met amazing photographers volunteering their time, skills, and equipment to give a little something back to the community.  This is just a start of something big and I want to thank Jeremy Cowart (the brainchild behind Help-Portrait) for planting the seed not only in my mind but in photographers minds all over the globe.

Although the rain was pouring down on Saturday, we still had a great turnout, better than what I was expecting given the weather situation.  Here’s a little behind the scenes video of what happened that day:

Some numbers as of this posting for you folks:  30,000+ portraits taken in 40+ Countries.  How awesome is that?!  In Los Angeles we had 85 volunteers with 6 photo stations, makeup area, greeting area,  and art & crafts area.

Thanks to Kodak for sponsoring us and providing a printing kiosk so we could get the prints to the families on the spot.

Thanks to Global Cafe for letting us use their facilities.

Thanks to Torn Up Tees for providing your services.  You guys made incredible shirts out of old shirts…that was amazing!

Thanks to JenMay for exceptionally organizing everything.

Thanks to all the volunteers.

Rainbow

Sorry for the darkness and grainy-ness…this was taken by my first gen iPhone!  But this bad boy made an appearance today for about 10 minutes…huge and bright!  So I guess rain is good for something!

Business 101

Filed Under (Business) by Marvin on 02-12-2009

Starting up a business is no easy feat especially when business was not your major in college, assuming one went to college.  It’s all fun and games getting your photography degree but when they shove you out into the world to fend for yourself, what do you do? Your dream is to own your own photography studio but you have no clue on how to start a business let alone run it.  I’ve met many photographers who want to have their own studio but don’t want to learn the business, marketing, advertising, and/or financial side of things and I think that is just not smart. It is not conducive to having a successful and profitable company.

As I journey into  setting up my own business, I am going to write up articles on things that I find, what works and what doesn’t, roadblocks along the way, organizing and planning, etc.  By no means am I an expert on starting up a business…I’m a web developer by day.  I just think it’s important to document as much as I can and if it can help a person out there, then that’s just icing on the cake.

Stay tuned to my first article…Business 101: Business Plans
